Awareness creation key to curtail cancer in Nigeria, says NGO

The Civil Society for Cancer Eradication in Nigeria, (CSCEN) an NGO, says its primary responsibility is to create awareness, especially in the rural areas as it is key in cancer mitigation.
Mr. Elijah Elijah, CSCEN National Coordinator on Wednesday in Abuja, said that the NGO would sensitize people in remote areas on cancer and health-related diseases.
“We are also involved in home-based nursing and support most of the patients otherwise referred to as palliative care.
“We teach them how to recognize signs and the immediate action to take,’’ Elijah said.
He advised that people should visit the hospital immediately they notice any of the signs because late presentation would hinder the treatment and progress.

According to him, we are involved in a grass-roots awareness campaign for cervical cancer screening for women and girls, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for the girl child in several states in Nigeria.
Elijah explained that cancer in children was becoming a problem which had made the organization focus on it.
He said that before the end of 2021, there would be the first-ever cancer retreat in Abuja where medical experts, policymakers, survivors would meet and discuss ways forward.
According to him, the organization is a coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) comprising NGOs, CBOs, FBOs, and foundations working in collaborations to provide coordinated services against cancer spread in Nigerian communities.
He said that the aim involved the prevention, mitigation, and eradication of cancer and related pandemics and their attendant impacts in Nigerian.
