Strike: You’re playing with time-bomb, ASUU tells FG

By Olusegun Olanrewaju

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday called on Nigerians to pressure the government to meet its agreement.

ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, urged Nigerians to beg the Federal Government to fulfill its part of the agreement it signed with the union to avert a looming strike.

Speaking shortly after a congress of the union in Ibadan, Akinwole appealed to Nigerians to prevail on the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to implement the agreements reached with ASUU in 2009.

Speaking on behalf of other executive members of the union, Akinwole said it is now evident that the present administration is paying lip service to education at the detriment of children of the poor.

According to the ASUU leader, there would be no need for a strike if the government had been faithful.

He said the union only wants the government to honour its commitment.

“We wish to inform you of the antics of the Federal Government. The government has not been fulfilling agreements since 2009. The government has been foot-dragging. The government is yet to fulfil its agreements,” he said.

Akinwole also noted, “We are now telling the public that the government is playing with a time bomb. We are now calling on the people to prevail on the Nigerian government to honour agreements with ASUU.

“If the government fulfills its agreements, there will be no need for a strike.”
