The Supreme Court of Nigeria has restored the leadership of David Mark as National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, bringing an end to a protracted internal leadership dispute within the party.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, the apex court set aside earlier rulings that had sacked Mark from his position, holding that due process was not followed in his removal.
The court affirmed that the processes leading to his emergence as chairman were in line with the party’s constitution and applicable laws.
The ruling effectively nullifies the claims of the rival faction within the party, which had sought to upturn Mark’s leadership through litigation.
The justices emphasised that internal party disputes must be resolved in accordance with established legal frameworks and warned against actions capable of destabilising political institutions.
Reacting to the judgment, Mark described the verdict as a victory for democracy and the rule of law, pledging to reposition the party for greater national relevance.
He called on aggrieved members to sheathe their swords and work together in the interest of the party.
The crisis within the ADC had deepened in recent months, with parallel leadership claims and court cases creating uncertainty over the party’s direction ahead of future elections.
The dispute also led to divisions among stakeholders at both national and state levels.
Political observers say the Supreme Court’s decision is likely to restore stability within the party, providing an opportunity for reconciliation and reorganisation.
However, they caution that the leadership must act swiftly to rebuild trust among members and strengthen internal cohesion.
