Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been named as one of Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people for 2021.
The magazine’s annual list of 100 most influential people in the world accords recognition to “people whose ideas, example, talent, or discoveries transform the world we live in”.
The list, released yesterday, places individuals in five categories: titans, pioneers, artists, leaders, and icons.
Okonjo-Iweala, a former Managing Director of the World Bank and Nigeria’s finance minister, became the first woman and first African to lead the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in March.
She was included in the “leaders” category, alongside US president, Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and Indian Narendra Modi.
