Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have rescued 47 persons, mostly women and children, who were held captive by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The rescue operation, which took place on June 20, 2026, followed sustained military pressure and coordinated offensive operations against terrorist hideouts within the Lake Chad region.
The intensified ground and aerial attacks reportedly forced the insurgents to abandon their positions, creating an opportunity for the captives to regain their freedom.
The rescued victims have been moved to a secure location where they are undergoing medical assessments and receiving necessary humanitarian assistance from relevant authorities and partner agencies.
The Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI said the development underscores the military’s continued commitment to weakening terrorist networks while protecting civilians and securing the release of those held against their will.
The command further pledged to maintain ongoing operations aimed at dismantling remaining ISWAP strongholds and restoring peace and stability across the North-East region.
