NPA to train Surveyors on negotiation skills, conflict management

The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGoF), Surv. Abuduganiyu Adebomehin said that he has concluded arrangement to activate the process for trainings of officials of the Department of Internal and International Boundary on conflict management and resolution, as well as negotiation skills.

Underscoring the importance of conflict management skills for surveyors in the country in view of the intricate nature of their tasks, the Surveyor General of the Federation said that he is collaborating with the National Peace Academy (NPA) for the training.

Surv. Adebomehin made this disclosure in Abuja, while receiving a team of the National Peace Academy (NPA) of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), led by the Director of the academy, Dr. Bosede Awodola.

Head of Press and Public Relations, OSGoF, Mr. Abu Michael in a statement said that IPCR is an agency of Federal Government, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The SGoF said surveyors are usually confronted with some hostile members of communities during demarcation work at border areas of both internal and international boundaries.

He noted that communication that would engender peace and mutual understanding remain germane to the surveyors.

He therefore pledged to ensure collaboration with IPCR for the training of surveyors and other staff of the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF) at the Institute’s Peace Academy.

He said he would immediately activate the process for trainings of officials of the Department of Internal Boundary, and those of International Boundary towards conflict management, resolution, and negotiation skills.

The work of OSGoF according to Surv. Adebomehin is to help to determine boundaries, and in so doing, surveyors relate with members of communities every now and then.

“Making peace and establishment of good relations among communities at borders remain a major concern of OSGoF,” he said.

Earlier, Director of the academy, Dr. Awodola assured the SGoF that the academy has the capacity to provide customized trainings depending on the various mandates of the MDAs.

Appreciating the mandate of OSGoF, an extra-ministerial Office of the Federal Government, Dr. Awodola described OSGOF as distinct and central to genuine development.

Dr. Awodola disclosed that IPCR engage in research, carryout intervention, and build capacity in areas of peace, conflict management and resolution as well as policy advice.

She further revealed that the academy has also been relating with the National Boundary Commission (NBC) especially in conflict management capacity building for its staff.
