
The Chairman of Ojo local government area, Lagos State, Mr. Rosulu Idowu, has called for continued sensitization and enlightenment on violence against the girl-child in Nigeria, to enable them live fulfilled lives.
Idowu made the call in Lagos while reacting to the communique issued by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), B, Zone, at the end of its maiden annual conference on Sep. 9, in Lagos.
While commending the Association, the chairman said that formulating policies on the girl-child, would prompt stakeholders to work together to seek solutions and ensure that they were implemented.
“We should continue to sensitize and enlighten stakeholders by making sure that there are programmes, from time to time, to educate people.
“As long as we keep talking about it, making criminals accountable and taking them away from our communities, within a limited time, everywhere will be safe to live,” he said.
Newsmen recalled that at the NAWOJ, B, Zone maiden conference, the Association noted that the education, health and general welfare of girls were being threatened.

Some of the areas in which they alleged threat to the girl-child, included, incessant abductions, systemic gender biases, sexual harassment, early and forced marriage.
They urged stakeholders, including government at all levels, civil society organizations and traditional rulers, to work together, to protect the rights and wellbeing of the girl-child.
