Ogun State House of Assembly has granted and approved the request of Governor Dapo Abiodun to extend the tenure of the current 20 transition committee chairmen and members by another period of three-months.
The governor had last week sought the permission of the house to extend the tenure of the chairmen and its members.
The approval followed the presentation of the report of the committee on local government and chieftaincy affairs by its chairman, Akeem Balogun, in respect of the request of the governor for the extension
However, it called on the governor to immediately constitute the board of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) for the conduct of elections into the councils in line with the nation’s constitution.
Balogun moved the motion for its adoption and seconded by the Minority Leader, Ganiyu Oyedeji and supported by other lawmakers during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo at the Assembly Complex, Oke-mosan, Abeokuta, today.
Oluomo said the constitution of the electoral commission became imperative to allow for the conduct of democratic elections, upon the expiration of the current approval of tenure extension for the current council chairmen for another three months in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Meanwhile, the assembly has invited the management of Dangote Industries Limited for deliberations on how to protect the lives of residents and promote more viable relationship with investors,
The invitation is to address and find a lasting solution to public complaints against the alleged recklessness of Dangote’s drivers which the lawmakers said had led to avoidable loss of lives in the state.
Oluomo announced the invitation, while responding to the submissions of a member representing Ijebu-North I State Constituency, Sylvester Niyi.
Niyi had decried what he described as the care-free attitudes of Dangote’s drivers, which in the past he said had led to the killing of some members of his constituency.
