The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have joined forces to enhance data protection in Nigeria’s insurance sector.
According to the NAICOM statement, the partnership was cemented on November 22 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the two agencies designed to strengthen industry privacy and compliance standards.
The agreement outlines key objectives, including Training and Capacity Building, Equipping industry stakeholders with the skills and knowledge to uphold data privacy, establishing Privacy Clinics, Providing dedicated resources to address data-related concerns and offering expert guidance, and compliance Monitoring, which includes Regular assessments to ensure adherence to data protection regulations.
Other areas include awareness Promotion, Which Educates insurance companies on the significance of data protection and its operational benefits, and Tailored Guidelines, Which Create industry-specific data protection frameworks for insurance institutions.
An Implementation Committee will be established to oversee the implementation of the MoU, featuring representatives from NAICOM, NDPC, the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), and the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB).
The committee is expected to monitor progress, provide direction, and foster collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the initiative’s success.
The partnership represents a pivotal step toward safeguarding policyholders’ personal data while promoting trust and compliance in the insurance sector.
