Lawmaker representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 01 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, has donated over 750 eyeglasses to his constituents.
The lawmaker also conducted free cataract operations for over 20 people, while also distributing free eye drugs.
The empowerment which began with an eye test done on scores of residents of Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 01 is part of the fulfilment of the campaign promise of Adedeji.
Speaking at his constituency office on Thursday, the lawmaker noted that the 3-day exercise, tagged, “Jigi Jah 2.0” is part of his efforts to give back to the society.
“Over the years, part of our responsibilities has been to represent the people and at the same time to give back to the society. We have received a series of requests from our constituents for one eye problem or the other so this is the second edition we are running, the first one we gave out 500 glasses.
“Today, we are giving out 750 glasses which is the second phase of the year, and towards the end of the year, we will give another 750 glasses. We will be doing free operations for 20 people and today being the first day, we have received over 20 people and we will be extending as much as 50 people for cataract operations.”
Adedeji stressed that many of his constituents have complained about eye problems and their lack of eyeglasses, which prompted him to carry out the exercise to meet their demands.
On how the beneficiaries were selected, the legislator said the selection is void of party affiliation, tribe, or religion.
His words, “It is open to everybody, we’ve done a series of media postings, banners, fliers to the entire constituency to tell them that we are doing 750 eyeglasses for everybody in the constituency.”
He added, “We have seen an increase in the number of those who are participating so we are expected to have more than 750 people for this exercise.
“We will continue to give to them as long as they come for the request and there is a need for the request, we would continue to give to them.”
On his part, the lead doctor for the exercise, Dr Kelechi, while praising the legislator stated that “We realise that so many people in the society have one issue or the other with their eyes which they are not able to take care of on their own and so this initiative is a way of giving back to the society.
He expressed in his job and that of his colleagues saying, “We are supposed to cater to 750 beneficiaries but I’m sure by the end of this exercise, we would have over 1000 beneficiaries of eyeglasses and treatment that will help them to see clearly and take care of themselves and activities.”
The beneficiaries commended the Assembly member for his effort to restore proper sight.
One of them, Mrs Tayo said, “I’ve always wanted to take care of my eyes but each time I try to, the cost makes it impossible. I’m grateful to Hon Adedeji for this project.”
