Time for national reconciliation, reorientation and reconstruction – Dele Momodu

Media entrepreneur and politician, Dele Momodu, has called for urgent national reconciliation, reorientation, and reconstruction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, he warned that Nigeria risks deepening political and social instability if corrective steps are not taken.

Momodu said the 2027 presidential race is expected to be a major contest between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing it as a “battle of the titans.”

He added that while a possible third force may emerge, it is unlikely to displace the two dominant political figures.

According to him, the current political climate underscores the need for a rethinking of Nigeria’s political culture and structures, particularly within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he urged to serve as a bridge between older political traditions and emerging modern governance ideals.

Momodu argued that Nigeria’s politics should evolve into a more balanced system that accommodates both conservative and cosmopolitan tendencies, as well as a blend of veteran politicians and technocrats.

He warned that rising tensions and what he described as “absolute chaos” in the political space could have severe consequences if left unchecked, stressing that national unity was at risk if the trend continues.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s political history, he referenced the contributions of founding national figures such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, and Obafemi Awolowo, noting that the country has drifted away from their ideals of ideological politics and national cohesion.

He further lamented what he called the rise of “politics of gangsterism,” urging political actors to return to issue-based engagement and meaningful ideological discourse.

Momodu concluded by calling for urgent action to rebuild national trust and strengthen unity across regions, warning that failure to act could worsen existing divisions in the country.
