AFTERMATH OF SATURDAY’S OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION: At last, the winners, losers

By Oludamisi Ojo
The long-awaited governorship election in Osun state had come and gone, but its memory will continue to linger on.

The outcome of the Polk was least expected considering the incumbency factor and support from external forces including Presidency.

However, the fall-out had been generating reactions from various sources.

The Winners
Ademola Adeleke: The PDP governorship flag bearer, who is now the governor-elect is a lucky winner. Around this time last four years, he was so apprehensive about the inclusive election, but now in a happy mood. The ‘Dancing Senator’ as being called is now Osun state governor-elect.

Shuab Oyedokun: The Inisa- born famous PDP leader was at a time, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the PDP. He recently made it public that the crisis with Osun PDP will become a thing of the past.

Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola: The former governor of Osun State is one of the PDP leaders in the state but fell out with Senator Adeleke during the primary to determine the governorship candidate which was eventually won by Adeleke. As a party leader, he will be a loud voice in the PDP’s administration in the state, despite all odds.

Soji Adagunodo: He was at a time the chairman of PDP in the state and even a leader of the party in the South West. With the victory of the PDP in Osun State, Adagunodo will occupy a significant position in the state as one of its notable leaders.

The losers
Governor Gboyega Oyetola: It is so rare for an incumbent administration to lose his seat for a second term easily to an opposition candidate. This is unlike what transpired in Ekiti last month, when its state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi ensure that another APC man, Biodun Oyebanji won the governorship seat which he will relinquish early next year. Many factors have contributed to APC’s defeat in Osun State, which they are now regretting.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu: The loss of power by APC in Osun state is a bad omen, it will harm the next year’s presidential election in the state in which Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the flag bearer. Victory for Oyetola in the last Saturday’s poll would have reinforced the chances of the APC in the South-West to guarantee victory for Tinubu’s presidency.

Chief Bisi Akande: The former APC National Chairman from Ila-Orangun is a loser as regards the result of the governorship election. Akande, who was also a former governor in the state, would have worked as a team leader with Oyetola to aid Tinubu’s victory in the state ahead of next year’s general election.

Senator Iyiola Omisore: He was formerly a leader in the PDP where he won a seat in the Senate even while in detention. However, because he failed to secure a governorship ticket, he dumped the PDP for Social Democratic Party which he later quit with his supporters to join the APC. He assisted APC in 2018 to win the governorship election for Oyetola. Consequently, the party compensated him with the prestigious position of the National Secretary of the APC. With the victory of the PDP in Osun State, Omisore is a loser.

Other notable APC leaders in the state are shocked by the recent development in the state.
