The immediate past United States president Donald Trump has been found guilty of sexually abusing and defaming writer E Jean Carroll, a New York jury said in civil case
However, the former president was cleared of rape over the alleged assault in a department store in the 1990s. The jury awarded the writer almost $5m in damages for the battery and defamation charges
Trump did not testify, but the jury – made up of six men and three women – was shown a video deposition where he denied the rape.
The trial featured controversial remarks from the former president about women’s bodies, including the infamous Access Hollywood recording. The claim was brought to trial after New York passed a law that allowed survivors to sue years after their alleged sexual assault.
