The University of Calabar has suspended 19 students for one academic session over alleged involvement in examination malpractice, in what the institution described as part of efforts to preserve academic integrity and uphold its disciplinary standards.
The sanctions, which take effect during the 2025/2026 academic session, were approved by the University’s Senate following recommendations submitted by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee after investigations into the allegations.
The affected students are expected to remain out of the institution for the entire academic year and will only be eligible to resume their studies in the 2026/2027 session, subject to compliance with conditions set by the university authorities.
The decision was conveyed in an official communication signed by the Director of Administration, Dr. Ekpo Citizen, on behalf of the Registrar, Dr. Chukwuka Icha.
Confirming the development, the institution’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Effiong Eyo, said the disciplinary action affected students drawn from a wide range of faculties and departments across the university.
According to him, the students were from the Faculties of Administration, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts, Education, Allied Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Environmental Sciences and Nursing, as well as departments including Peace and Conflict Studies, Science Laboratory Technology, Estate Management and Marketing.
“The suspension was approved by the Senate based on the recommendations of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee,” Eyo said.
He disclosed that all Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and relevant administrative units had been directed to enforce the Senate’s decision without exception.
“All Deans, Heads of Departments and relevant units of the University have been duly notified and directed to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order,” he added.
