UNICEF spearheads immunisation against measles, cancer, others in FCT

By Ben Adoga, Abuja

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has taken a bold step to spearhead the immunisation of children in the FCT against measles, cancer, polio, and other childhood-related diseases.

Disclosing this over the weekend, Dr Ruqayya Wamakko, acting Executive Secretary of the FCT-Primary Health Care Board, PHCB, said it would be done in collaboration with the FCT-PHCB.

Wamakko said it was necessary to sensitise the media to the exercise, slated between October 26 and November 2 in Abuja and tagged Supplemental Immunization Activities (SIAs). Hence, the parley was to sensitise the media to the exercise.

She charged parents of young children with taking advantage of the SIAs to bring their children out for the immunisation exercise, as she warned that prevention is better than cure.

For his part, Dr Okoli Nicholas, acting Director of the FCT Primary Health Care Board, called on the media to provide the public with the right information to ensure the success of the SIAs, saying the vaccines are safe, free, and available.

Speaking at the event, UNICEF country head of Social and Behaviour Change, Mrs Margaret Soyemi, charged the media to pass the right messages to stop preventable deaths of children.
