UNIPORT dissolves students’ union, orders officials to face investigative panel

The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dissolved the institution’s Students’ Union leadership and suspended all union activities with immediate effect, directing the affected officials to hand over all union property and appear before an investigative panel.

The directive was contained in a memorandum dated July 19, 2026, issued by the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs and signed by the Dean, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the instruction of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike.

According to the memorandum, the dissolution affects the three arms of the Students’ Union, Hall Representatives and every other Students’ Union activity until further notice.

Following the dissolution, all executive members of the union were ordered to immediately surrender every item belonging to the Students’ Union to the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.

The university said the items to be handed over include union property, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials and any other assets in the possession of the outgoing officials.

The affected student leaders were also directed to make themselves available whenever invited by an investigative panel constituted by the university to account for their administration.

The management warned that any official who fails to comply with the directives would face appropriate disciplinary action.

Copies of the memorandum were sent to the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the Registrar, the Bursar, the Chief Security Officer, all Deans, Heads of Departments and other relevant university authorities.

The university, however, did not state the reasons for dissolving the Students’ Union or disclose the specific issues the investigative panel has been mandated to examine.
