Voters show enthusiasm as markets, shops remain closed, roads deserted in Anambra

Nigerians across the 774 local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday began the process through the ballot boxes to cast their votes to elect a new President and members of the National Assembly.

In Awka, the Anambra’ State capital, and adjoining towns, voters as early as 7:20am were seen making frantic efforts to locate their polling booths at popular Aroma along the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha expressway, Ekwueme Square and adjoining locations and towns, a development that showed their strong desire to cast their votes to elect their leader and representatives.

Checks revealed a large turn out of voters at different polling booths and centers within Awka town who came out for the epic and historic exercise .

However, there was no presence of security men at Aroma which usually commands large number of people on daily basis, though could be possibility of presence of plaincloth operatives.

Findings showed heavy presence of security agencies within the communities and strategic locations near the mapped areas for the elections as well as major roads.

All major roads were deserted while markets, shops, motor parks and business centers were closed even as movement was restricted except those out to cast their votes to various designated polling centers.
