Reactions as Chinese investors seize Nigerian guest houses in UK

Some Nigerians have taken to their social media accounts to react to the seizure of two properties belonging to the Nigerian government in the United Kingdom.

A Chinese investment group, Zhongshang Fucheng Industrial Investment Ltd is set to list two residential structures it confiscated from Nigeria for sale on global online marketplace eBay.

It was gathered that the group is racing to recover up to $70 million in arbitration awards from the West African country.

The Investment company took possession of two buildings linked to the Nigerian government in Liverpool, United Kingdom, in June 2024, years after Nigeria failed to settle an arbitration judgment handed down in 2021.

Reacting, a netizen, Abdulrasheed Ajia, via his X account wrote, “Can’t believe Nigeria let it get this far! Losing assets in the UK because they couldn’t pay up? Embarrassing! And now some Chinese company is selling our properties on eBay like they’re unwanted goods? Get it together, Nigeria!”

Another Nigerian on X, Mr Fowosere, also expressed disappointment in the government saying, “Nigeria is being disgraced all over the world. Anyway, these planes and houses abroad do nothing tangible to affect the lives of ordinary Nigerians, only politicians enjoy them and still public funds to maintain them. They are useless to the average Nigeria that hardly affords a mudu of rice.”

“Now it gets interesting Chinese investors and companies are coming for what Nigeria owes. Unfortunately, our unreasonable government would prefer to replace these guest houses instead of clearing off the debt,” @IamVade wrote.

Emeka Oraneche wrote, “This is even more disgraceful and annoying when I realize that it’s not even China as a country that is dealing with us but a mere COMPANY!”

Another netizens, @CryptoRangee stated that “The seizure of Nigeria’s guest houses in Liverpool by Chinese investors, with plans to sell them on eBay for $2.2 million, highlights the serious repercussions of unresolved financial disputes. This move underscores the urgent need for Nigeria to address its $70 million arbitration debt to avoid further international embarrassment and asset losses.”

@Selfmadeceleb3, “The truth is there will be nothing left for Nigeria not talk of 2027 election once this regime is done with us.”

“By the time Tinubu is done with Nigeria, we’ll have no international reputation not to talk of foreign assets left. First, it was airplanes and now this. What a shame!” @SavageKizz wrote.

@_Jaygigs wrote, “The funny part of this story is that a Nigerian politician or friend of politicians may still end up as the person to buy it.”
