There are strong indications on Tuesday that the coming days may witness a total shut down of fuel supply across the country as petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, are set to begin a nationwide strike.
The strike which could cripple economic activities in the country may begin any moment from today, (Thursday). The PTD had complained over the deplorable conditions of federal roads across the country and other pending issues.
While giving full backing to the strike action, Olawole Afolabi, General Secretary of NUPENG said yesterday, on Channels television that the Petroleum workers Union would be standing with the truck drivers over sundry grievances including static salaries since 2015.
According to him, Tanker drivers who are employees of the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, have been on the same wages since 2015 in spite of several promises of a progressive review.

Other unresolved issues of the tanker drivers are the perceived refusal of the federal government to enforce the compulsory installation of safety valves in all petroleum trucks to protect the inflammable contents from spilling over in a situation of road mishaps and alleged continued abuse of the tonnage capacity of Petroleum trucks by marketers and transporters across the country.
But in an apparent response to douse the tension, Folorunsho Esho of the NNPC Task Credit Scheme charged with fixing selected federal roads in the North Central and South-South region disclosed that the government remains committed to completing all critical roads soon.
