The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja affirming the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election despite previously taking the presidential oath of office twice.
According to the party, the suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility was “vexatious” and amounted to a gross abuse of court process, adding that it should never have been filed in the first place.
The opposition party also applauded the court for awarding punitive costs against the plaintiff, saying the decision would discourage “busybodies and irritants” allegedly being used by anti-democratic forces to distract the political process ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PDP further noted that the court victory, combined with the screening waiver earlier granted to Jonathan by the party, has now cleared every obstacle to what it described as the former president’s “presidential rescue mission.”
The statement comes just days before the PDP’s scheduled primaries on May 28, where candidates for various elective positions are expected to emerge.
The development is expected to intensify political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential race, with Jonathan’s possible return already generating widespread debate across the country.
