Immediate past chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Anambra State, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu on Wednesday attributed the failure of successive governments to ensure a functional democratic system through elective government in the country’s 774 local government areas as a major cause of the prevailing atmosphere of insecurity ravaging every nook and crannies of the polity.
Chief Nwobu stated this in an interview with newsmen during the conduct of the Party’s local government Congress held in none councils out of the 21 LGAs in the state.
He pointed out that if the elected local government system is functional and with duly elected chairmen and legislatures presiding over the affairs of the councils, the majority of unemployed youths who today roam the streets would have been gainfully employed by the local government areas and by doing so crime and criminality would be drastically reduced.
He described as a welcome development the pronouncement by Professor Charles Soludo during his Inauguration on March 17th, 2022 as the sixth elected Governor of Anambra State that he would ensure that election into the third tier of government holds in no distant time.
Nwobu said that the absence of local administration is part of what is generating disharmony in the state, adding that insecurity and other things could be attributed to the nonconduct of local government elections due to the absence of governance instruments at the local base.
“I believe it’s in good faith to have pledged and promise to conduct local government election but it’s neither here nor there; we watch and see him (Governor Soludo) implement that,” he said.
Chief Nwobu who is seeking reelection as chairman of the PDP on April 2nd, 2022 in the state harped on the need for a united front among the party leaders and members across the length and breadth of the state to ensure purposeful and visionary leadership and to attract viable development from the center.
He promised that if re-elected as chairman of the party, he would enforce proper discipline among members and carry everybody along as he has always done.
He explained that “The essence of a political party and party leadership is to gain political power at the governance level and we are still in that process. We are looking ahead to 2023 and our is in a position, having seen that the change the federal government-led All Progressives Congress, APC, promised which made Nigerians vote it into power in 2015 has become a testimony of “bloodletting, insecurity, and hardship to the citizenry”.
He urged Nigerians to prepare themselves ahead of 2023 to return PDP to power at the federal level, stressing that PDP is the only option for the country to get away from the present state of insecurity and economic hardship threatening the lives of the masses.

Nwobu also expressed reservation over the move by former President Goodluck Jonathan to defect to the APC, pointing out that such action calls for deep concern within the ranks of the PDP.
According to him, “It calls for a great deal of worry, because, PDP will miss his experience, so we pray it doesn’t happen,” he stated.
The PDP Topshop further reiterated the importance for the PDP leadership to enforce discipline among its members so that the party would be stronger and be in better stead to win power back and return as the ruling party at the center.
He described the failure of the PDP to regain power during the past Anambra state governorship election as a result of a lack of discipline among members of the party in the state, pointing out that most of the aspirants for the governorship ticket of the PDP who left to other political parties after losing the ticket to contest the governorship poll still lost, describing their action as “wild goose chase”.
