Five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors sympathetic to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday met behind closed doors in Enugu State.
The governors include Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia, Samuel Ortom, Benue, and Wike.
They arrived at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Wike’s private jet and were received by Governor Ugwuanyi.
At the end of the meeting which was held at the Enugu Government House, the governors refused to speak to the media.
However, sources said the meeting provided an opportunity for the governors to consider their options following renewed efforts of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the party to make them see reasons to support the party.
Atiku has also held a consultative meeting with PDP stakeholders both in the South East and South West but the problem is yet to be resolved.
The five governors were also absent at the inauguration of the PDP presidential campaign council, which was held on September 28.
After their absence at the recent inauguration of the Campaign Council, Wike met again with Atiku who reportedly insisted that Ayu must go as party chairman.
Wike also hosted Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for the second time fuelling speculations that he may work together for the Obi presidency which has been gaining much ground across the country.
The meeting comes amid a crisis in the party over calls for Iyorchia Ayu to step down as national chairman of the party.
Meanwhile, allies of Wike have insisted that they will not work for the party in the 2023 presidential election if Ayu does not step down as chairman.
The calls for the resignation of Ayu is said to be because the party chairman and presidential candidate cannot come from the same region.
