Wike revokes 2011 Apo–Karshi Road contract, re-awards project to SCC

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revoked the long-stalled contract for the 13-kilometre Apo–Karshi Road, originally awarded in 2011 to Kakatar Construction Company Ltd., citing persistent non-performance.

Wike announced the decision on Thursday during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects across the FCT, including the Karu–Customs–CBN Road, Gishiri–Katampe Road, and the Apo–Wasa Carriageway.

He said the contract had now been re-awarded under an emergency arrangement to SCC Nigeria Ltd., a firm he described as having the capacity to deliver promptly.

“Let me tell you the truth, we have terminated that contract; it has been re-awarded to SCC. If you go there now, you will see that they have started work,” Wike declared.

The minister criticised the previous contractor’s slow pace, stressing that road projects must not be politicised at the expense of residents’ welfare.

Wike also disclosed that the contract for the Kubwa–Bwari Road has been awarded, with work already underway. The new road, he said, will serve as an alternative route for commuters.

During the inspection of the Karu area, Wike addressed the impending demolition of a shop obstructing a water channel. He assured the shop owner that compensation would be paid but insisted that public interest must take precedence.

“You cannot block water channels, and we are even sympathetic by saying we will give you money. But we must allow water to flow to prevent flooding. Sometimes we should not be emotional,” he said, noting that the demolition was necessary to safeguard the area.

Wike expressed satisfaction with the reception he received from residents during the tour, saying their enthusiasm reflected support for the administration’s infrastructural drive.

“What makes government feel relaxed is when the people are happy. The essence of governance is to make people happy and improve their lives,” he added.

The minister stated that several ongoing road projects would be commissioned during the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He further announced that the FCTA will not initiate new projects in 2026, explaining that the coming year—being a political year—will be dedicated to completing all projects already underway.

“In 2026, we are not likely to initiate any new projects. We want to ensure that the projects started this year will be completed,” he said.
