In a political environment frequently dominated by promises, rhetoric and partisan posturing, Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has distinguished himself through visible performance, courage, political foresight and an uncommon capacity to translate presidential directives into tangible results.
Since assuming office as FCT Minister in August 2023, Chief Wike has brought urgency, discipline and renewed purpose to the administration of Nigeria’s capital. Roads long abandoned have received attention; critical infrastructure has been completed or revived; satellite towns have gained greater prominence in development planning; and the machinery of the Federal Capital Territory Administration has been compelled to respond more decisively to the needs of residents.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has publicly acknowledged the Minister’s contribution to the transformation taking place in Abuja. This recognition is important because Chief Wike’s achievements are not isolated personal accomplishments. They form part of the broader implementation of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
What distinguishes Chief Wike is not merely the number of projects being undertaken, but his practical approach to governance. He understands that public office must produce measurable outcomes. For him, leadership is not an ornamental position. It is a responsibility to solve problems, confront institutional inertia and deliver infrastructure and services that citizens can see and use.
His tenure has demonstrated the value of setting clear priorities, mobilising resources, holding officials and contractors accountable, and maintaining direct supervision of projects. Abuja has increasingly become a vast construction and renewal corridor, with attention being given to roads, bridges, public transportation infrastructure, schools, healthcare facilities and the development of previously neglected districts and satellite communities.
This is the kind of purposeful leadership Nigeria requires.
A RELIABLE PILLAR OF THE TINUBU ADMINISTRATION
Chief Wike’s significance to the present administration extends beyond his ministerial portfolio. He has emerged as one of the most courageous and dependable political supporters of President Tinubu.
His support has been consistent, open and devoid of ambiguity. At a time when some politicians calculate every position according to personal convenience, Chief Wike has demonstrated that political cooperation can rise above party boundaries when the stability and progress of the country are at stake.
He supported President Tinubu at a critical moment in Nigeria’s political history. Since the inauguration of the administration, he has continued to defend the President’s policies and advance the Renewed Hope Agenda through performance in office and strategic political mobilisation.
This is the context in which the emerging Rainbow Coalition should be understood.
The Rainbow Coalition is not simply another partisan platform. It represents an innovative political framework bringing together Nigerians from different parties, communities and political traditions around a common national objective: supporting the administration of President Tinubu and consolidating the reforms initiated under his leadership.
In Rivers State, the coalition has brought together political stakeholders who may differ in their party affiliations but share a commitment to the President’s re-election and the continuation of the Renewed Hope Agenda. Chief Wike has described this alignment as a family united in support of President Tinubu rather than a conventional party structure. The emerging coalition has also been presented as a vehicle for mobilising support for the President’s second-term ambition.
That is political ingenuity.
Nigeria is an extraordinarily diverse federation. No serious national leader can afford to build exclusively around one party faction, ethnic constituency, religious group or geopolitical zone. Winning and governing Nigeria require broad national consensus. The modified constitutional requirements for electing a President themselves emphasise both numerical strength and geographical spread.
Chief Wike understands this reality. The Rainbow Coalition is therefore a bridge across political divisions—a platform through which individuals who support President Tinubu can work together without being constrained by old rivalries or rigid partisan boundaries.
WHY THE OPPOSITION TO THE COALITION?
The intensity of the opposition to the Rainbow Coalition raises legitimate questions.
If the coalition is merely an insignificant political arrangement, why are some politicians so deeply unsettled by it? Why should a movement established to mobilise support for the President become an object of anxiety among people who also claim to support his re-election?
It is difficult to avoid two conclusions.
First, some opponents of the Rainbow Coalition may be uncomfortable with Chief Wike’s rapidly rising national profile. His performance in the FCT, political influence in Rivers State and increasing capacity to build alliances across party lines have established him as one of the most consequential political figures in contemporary Nigeria.
Those who cannot match his record of performance may understandably find his expanding influence intimidating. But political relevance is not secured by attempting to diminish another person’s achievements. It is earned through service, competence, courage and the ability to mobilise people around a credible cause.
Second, those who deliberately seek to weaken a broad coalition mobilising for President Tinubu’s re-election must explain how their actions advance the President’s second-term objective.
No genuine supporter of the President should oppose the expansion of his political base. No committed member of the Renewed Hope family should resent efforts to attract supporters from other parties and regions. A presidential election is not won by excluding willing allies. It is won by enlarging the coalition of citizens who believe in the leadership, policies and future direction represented by the candidate.
Those working against the Rainbow Coalition are therefore either apprehensive about Chief Wike’s rising national stature or insufficiently committed to the re-election of President Tinubu. They cannot convincingly profess support for the President while simultaneously attempting to dismantle one of the broadest emerging platforms for his electoral mobilisation.
PERFORMANCE AS THE FOUNDATION OF POLITICS
The ultimate strength of Chief Wike’s politics is performance.
He understands that political structures must be supported by evidence of governance. The roads, bridges and other infrastructure being delivered across the FCT provide the administration with concrete achievements to present to Nigerians. His argument for continuity is therefore not based solely on political sentiment. It rests on the proposition that the Tinubu administration should be given sufficient time to consolidate its reforms and complete its development programme.
The Rainbow Coalition must consequently remain open, inclusive and firmly focused on national development. It should welcome progressive Nigerians from the APC, PDP and other political parties who believe that President Tinubu’s administration deserves their support.
It must also avoid becoming a platform for personal attacks or the exclusion of legitimate political interests. Its strength should come from its diversity, its clarity of purpose and its capacity to mobilise Nigerians around performance, stability and continuity.
Chief Wike has shown that political differences need not prevent cooperation in the national interest. He has also demonstrated that a minister can combine political courage with administrative competence and visible delivery.
A PATRIOTIC POLITICAL PROJECT
At a time when Nigeria needs unity, stability and sustained national development, Chief Wike’s Rainbow Coalition offers a pragmatic pathway towards building a wider national consensus around President Tinubu’s leadership.
The coalition should not be feared. It should be strengthened.
Its expansion across Rivers State and other parts of the federation can provide the President with a genuinely national network of supporters drawn from different political traditions. Such a platform can help reduce destructive partisan hostility and replace it with constructive cooperation around shared national objectives.
Chief Nyesom Wike deserves commendation for his extraordinary performance as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his ingenuity in developing the Rainbow Coalition as a vehicle for national political mobilisation.
History often reserves a special place for leaders who combine vision with courage and courage with action. Chief Wike is progressively earning that place.
His message is simple but powerful: political parties may differ, but the pursuit of national progress must unite us.
Those who genuinely desire the successful re-election of President Tinubu should embrace every lawful and inclusive effort to broaden the President’s support base. The moment calls for cooperation, not territorial rivalry; performance, not empty slogans; and political bridge-building, not the erection of new walls.
Chief Wike has chosen to build those bridges. The visible transformation of the Federal Capital Territory and the emergence of the Rainbow Coalition demonstrate that he possesses both the administrative competence and political vision required for the task.
Nigeria should recognise, encourage and celebrate such leadership.
