The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagun, has described the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor and vice presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Ifeanyi Okowa, and other chieftains from the party as surprising and least expected.
At a press conference at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, Damagun said the PDP had been fair to Oborevwori and Delta people. He wondered what could have gone wrong to necessitate their exit from the party.
“We least expected it from them. They didn’t say the party did anything (wrong) to them. If there was one state we were good with, it was Delta State. We did not expect to hear that the governor and our vice presidential candidate have moved to APC. We will now move to secure our party in the state by setting up a caretaker committee,” he said.
It will be recalled that Oborevwori, Okowa, all national and state assembly lawmakers, and all political appointees indicated their intention to dump the major opposition party. Their action has continued to reverberate across the country.
