Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has constituted a high-powered administrative committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano, with a directive to uncover the truth and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents.

The committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, was inaugurated following growing public concern over the student’s death and calls for a transparent investigation.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Other members of the panel include the Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Aminu Hussain; Barrister Hamza Dantani; Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board, Baba Abubakar Umar; Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa; a representative of private school proprietors, Imam Ahmed Zubairu; the Parent-Teacher Association Chairman of St. Louis College; Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education, Hafsat Aminu Adhama, who will serve as secretary; and Binta Abdullahi Mukhtar as assistant secretary.

The committee has been mandated to conduct what the government described as a thorough, independent and professional investigation into the incident.

Its assignment includes establishing a clear timeline of events leading to the student’s death, identifying possible lapses in supervision, welfare management and institutional procedures, and determining whether existing safety protocols were breached.

The panel will also examine medical records and relevant reports, investigate the social environment within the school, assess allegations of bullying, coercion or unauthorised disciplinary practices among students, and review the effectiveness of existing complaint and reporting mechanisms.

In addition, members will evaluate the compliance of school authorities with student supervision guidelines and recommend reforms to boarding school administration, disciplinary procedures, emergency medical response systems, and student safety standards across schools in Kano State.

Governor Yusuf said his administration remained committed to ensuring that the truth surrounding the incident is established and that those responsible, where necessary, are held accountable.

He directed members of the committee to discharge their assignment with fairness, diligence and professionalism.

“The truth surrounding the incident must be established, and appropriate measures taken to prevent a recurrence,” the governor said.

The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the state government within the stipulated timeframe.
