Ekpoma, Emuhi and Igor Residents Cry Out Over Deplorable Road

By Victor Ofure Osehobo, Benin

Five years after the House of representatives called on the Federal government to reconstruct the Ekpoma-Emuhi-Igor road in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo state, the people say they are still suffering untold hardship due to the deplorable state of the road.

Clan Head of the community, Mr Charles Ihimekpen, who said the area is the Pineapple haven of the nation, has lamented the action of the government since its basically a federal road linking Edo and Delta States.

He said, ” The road is worse in the wet season and that is when farm produce hardly make it out of the area, forcing farmers to sell cheap. Moreover a large quantity is wasted as they remain unsold in the farms”.

Worried by the neglect of the road by both the federal and state governments, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the area along with some inhabitants have resorted to self help by asking for levies that has done little to ameliorate the dilapidated road.

According to Mr Albert Oboh, who is the CAN chairman, Emuhi chapter, “We have been doing palliative work on the road, by donating money themselves to rent tipper, get gravel to fill some bad spots, and the community is replicating this to no avail”.

Both Mr Ihimekpen and Rev. Albert Oboh, however, say the road needs a total reconstruction which only the government can carry out and want this done as soon as possible of only in the interest of the residents and its economic relevance.
