BREAKING: Appeal Court dismisses Secondus’ suit, gives go ahead for PDP Convention

Tobi Adebayo
The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt has dismissed a suit filed by the suspended National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, restraining the party from holding its 2021 National Convention.

The convention is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 30 and 31, 2021, in Abuja.

The three-man appeal panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani on Friday ruled that the PDP had the legal right to hold conventions periodically.

Reading the judgement, Justice Gabriel Kolawole described Secondus’ suit to suspend the planned convention as an act of “self-induced urgency” to disrupt an ongoing lawful process of the party.

Kolawole also described the suspended Chairman’s suit as “an afterthought and an abuse of court process.”

The judge stated further that the court found no merit in Secondus’ appeal, saying he voluntarily relinquished his office since he did not challenge his removal at ward and local government levels.

Legal counsel to Secondus, Tayo Oyetibo, however, said his client will wait for the outcome of the main suit on his status as the party’s National Chairman before the same court to determine whether or not to go on appeal.
