As the Christian faithful worldwide celebrate Easter to mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, residents of Abuja have described this year’s celebration as lean Easter and devoid of the usual pomp and festivities.
Most residents of the FCT said the harsh economy practically made it impossible for them to celebrate the way they used to.
Some residents said the price of staple food items was on the high side and that they could not celebrate fully.
Deaconess China, popularly known as Women Leader in the Orozo area of Abuja told our correspondent that the price of rice, chicken, and other popular consumables was too high and families decided to have a lean celebration.
“This year’s Easter is a low one. See the price of rice, how many people can buy and give out like before. I can’t imagine that I will buy rice for almost N60,000 per 50 kg bag.
“Chicken has added so much money, even the ones they will tell you N6, 500 are small ones. The types we used to reject before that they are not matured are the ones we are buying now, to get a mature one, ha! Who can pay? Only a few top government people and politicians can afford them now.
Several others spoken to lamented the harsh economy, more so when they think of paying school fees soon after this holiday.
