Abuja residents to experience park ‘n’ pay soon

By Ben Adoga
Abuja residents may be in for another era of the park and pay as the Transportation Secretariat of the FCT Administration is already working out modalities to reintroduce the park and pay policy.

ThisNigeria gathered that a meeting was scheduled with stakeholders on Monday to discuss the modalities for the implementation of the park and pay policy.

Recall that in April 2014 the policy was declared illegal by Justice Peter Affen of an FCT High Court because there was no law backing the policy.

Before its stoppage, the policy which was introduced to control the orderly parking of vehicles by residents in the city center became a serious source of corruption and confusion.

However, five years later in June 2019, it was hinted that the then FCTA Secretary of Transportation, Kayode Opeifa made efforts to vacate the judgment and reintroduce the policy. It’s not clear if that was done as the policy was not reintroduced before the end of that Administration.

Negotiations are on with the FCTA Transport Secretary, Hon. Zakari Angulu Dobi to perfect the reintroduction of the policy.

The meeting was with Parking Managers (NAJEL & ATB). At the time of this report, the meeting was in progress and the outcome was yet unknown.

A senior official of the Secretariat who preferred anonymity said the reintroduction of the policy was necessitated by the need to generate funds for the Administration.

He said the Administration was finding it difficult to pay salaries and that generating funds in this area would assist in meeting the funding needs of the Administration.
