ADC, INEC fight heats up polity

 By Benson Ezugwu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has insisted to continue with its state congresses despite Indepedent National Electoral Commission (INEC) position not to monitor its programme until the court decides the pending case relating to the leadership of the party.

Enugu State chapter on Saturday conducted two parallel congresses, with two separate state chairmen and executives emerging.

The parallel congresses, which were held at different venues saw the emergence of Maj. Gen. Rtd. Chris Eze, as the Chairman, while Prof. Austine Akulue emerged as the chairman in the other faction.

The two congresses were held at different venues within Enugu metropolis and both chairmen hailed from the Enugu North Senatorial district, where the chairmanship is zoned to.

It was also reported that some states refused to hold their congresses amid the uncertainty hanging on the party pending the time the matter would be resolved at the court.

Some of the states where the congress were held INEC officials did not attend and this put a question mark on the legality of  such event.

Amid this crisis rocking the party, ADC  on Sunday released the updated list of its Convention Committee and sub-committees ahead of its April 14 national convention.

A statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja, said the update was aimed at strengthening coordination and ensuring a smooth and credible convention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party had earlier released its National Convention Central Coordination Committee, with Sen. Liyel Imoke as the Chairman and Sen. Aminu Tambuwal as the Deputy Chairman.

The party urged all committee members to discharge their responsibilities with diligence and called on stakeholders to support the process.

The updated lists signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo read: “The ADC has approved the nomination of the following persons to serve on the convention planning committee for the national convention to be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.”

NAN reports that the updated convention committee list had 16 sub-committees, including logistics, electoral, accommodation, venue, security, finance, media and publicity, delegate accreditation and welfare, among others. (NAN)
