ADC names Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.

According to the ADC, Amaechi’s nomination followed the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary election, in which he emerged as the runner-up and secured significant support from party members across the federation.

The party said Amaechi would join former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the ADC ticket for the 2027 presidential contest, describing the partnership as a combination of experience, national appeal, and leadership capacity.

In the statement, the ADC said the proposed Atiku-Amaechi ticket represented “the coming together of two tested statesmen” capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic, security, and governance challenges.

The party highlighted Amaechi’s political career, noting that he had served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later Minister of Transportation under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the ADC, Amaechi’s experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government positions him to play a key role in a future administration.

The party also argued that the former minister would strengthen its electoral prospects, citing his influence in the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria, as well as his reputation as an administrator and coalition builder.

“The combined experience of Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi in governance, economic management, public administration, and party organisation offers Nigerians a credible alternative capable of restoring confidence in government and accelerating national development,” the statement said.

The ADC further stated that the ticket reflects its commitment to national unity, economic revival, job creation, and improved security, adding that it was prepared to provide what it described as competent leadership for the country.

The party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society groups, women and youth organisations, and other Nigerians to support its campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.

The announcement comes as political parties continue consultations and coalition-building efforts in preparation for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race in 2027.
