Again, Senate condemns killing of scores in Benue, others

The Senate, this Wednesday, strongly condemned the unabating serial attacks and murder of scores of indigenes of Izzi Clan of Ado Local Government Area of Benue State and teeming citizens in the country.

The legislature expressed deep regret and sadness over the murder of innocent citizens and wanton destruction of property in Benue and other parts of country by alleged herdsmen following separate motions by Senators Sam Egwu (Ebonyi North) and Abba Moro (Benue South) call for justice.

Senator Egwu, in his motion just as his counterpart, Senator Moro, raised the alarm that on Sunday, 30th May, 2021, alleged herdsmen again invaded Nduobashi village, Obakotaru village and Odoke village all in Ado LA of Benue State and gruesomely murder in cold blood scores of indigenes of the area, destroyed about 70 homes and burnt down two markets.

The bandits, they said, equally destroyed with explosive devices the only functional health care in the area that was built by Sudan United Mission leaving scores of persons currently receiving treatment at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

“Concerned that despite several motions raised and adopted on the floor of this Senate, the gruesome murder of innocent citizens by alleged herdsmen has continued unabated and if nothing drastic is done to stop this unfortunate trend, the wicked and senseless killings kidnapping and destruction property may continue,” the Red Chamber directed the Nigerian Police and other relevant security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation of these dastardly attacks and to promptly arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

The legislature also observed a minute silence in honour of the victims of the attacks and resolved that NEMA should immediately intervene through the provision of relief materials to the families of the victims, the displaced persons in the affected communities and injured persons.
