Amaechi will lose polling unit to NDC, party’s media director

The Director of New Media and Strategic Communications of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Theo Abu, has dismissed the electoral prospects of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

He declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate would be defeated even in his polling unit in Rivers State during the 2027 general election.

Abu made the assertion in a post on X on Monday while reacting to the ADC’s announcement of Amaechi as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

“I have learned that the ADC has picked Rotimi Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election,” Abu wrote.

“As far as I know, the NDC will defeat both the ADC and Amaechi in his polling unit in Rivers State in 2027.

“Amaechi stands no chance,” he declared.

The comments came moments after the ADC formally unveiled Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

According to the ADC, Amaechi’s nomination followed extensive consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from the six geopolitical zones.

The party said the former Minister of Transportation would join Atiku on its ticket for the 2027 presidential election following the conclusion of its presidential primary, where Amaechi emerged runner-up and secured significant support from party members across the country.

The ADC described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a partnership that combines experience, national appeal and leadership capacity, arguing that both politicians possess the credentials required to tackle Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.

The party also highlighted Amaechi’s political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of Rivers State for two terms and later Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

It further maintained that Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria would boost its electoral chances and strengthen its campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.

However, Abu’s reaction signals the NDC’s confidence in its own electoral strength as political parties continue consultations, realignments and coalition-building efforts in preparation for what is expected to be a fiercely contested presidential election in 2027.
