The Labour Party (LP) suffered a significant blow yesterday following the exit of factional leader Callistus Okafor, who claimed to be leaving the party with five million loyalists.
At a press briefing in Abuja, Okafor announced the formation of a new political movement, WaZoBia Nigeria, which he described as a nonpartisan alternative to the “deeply divided” LP.
“My faction, we met and said that this is the time. I hereby today announce to Nigerians… the five million Nigerians under my control, hereby today pull out from LP to team WaZoBia Nigeria,” he declared.
Okafor blamed internal strife and a failure of leadership for his departure, pointing fingers at the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi and National Chairman, Julius Abure.
“We have looked at where we just left and at His Excellency Peter Obi. When he came to the party, he supported Abure, who has become his archenemy today. If Peter Obi had called me, LP would have gone into that election with one mind,” he lamented.
