Fourteen lawmakers impeached the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Frank Okiye and Roland Asoro, respectively.
The premises was also invaded by the Nigerian Police Force, an action that Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) describes as unconstitutional and illegal.
In a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWAs National Coordinator, the Inspector General of Police has no powers to interfere in the legislation of the state except where duly invited.
They also call for the arrest of the officers who carried out this illegality and their prosecution including the masterminds.
“If it is the former Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, that invited the police then it is illegal and he too should be arrested for the attempted overthrow of a part of government because it is a coup and treason for anybody to try to change any government through illegalities as adumbrated unambiguously by the Supreme law of Nigeria,” it said.
They called on citizens of Edo state to stand up for their rights.
