eHailing ride apps such as Uber and Bolt have announced their decision to go on a one week strike in Lagos state through the president of the National Union of Professional App-Based Workers, Ayoade Ibrahim.
Speaking with The Guardian on Monday morning, Ayoade said that they would like to negotiate with the state government about their responsibilities and the regulations.
Consequent on the complaints by the drivers about the burden put on them due to the regulations, the new regulations which were supposed to be operational on August 20 were modified. The drivers complained about the service charge on each trip and the N25 million licence fee including the N10 annual renewal of the licence.
After certain modifications, Ayoade insists that his union was deliberately sidelined from the August meeting with the governor despite having had five meetings with the Ministry of Transportation. He insists that the modification is still a heavy burden on the drivers.
“They did not call us for the final conclusion with Mr Governor. They know our stand. That is why they sidelined us during the governor’s meeting. They denied us the opportunity to tell Mr Governor of our problems,” Ayoade said.
