
The Ebonyi Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Charles Akpuenika, on Wednesday, hailed Gov. David Umahi’s presence at the various zonal venues for the state’s school sports competition.
Akpuenika gave the commendation in Abakaliki said this on the 2021 edition of the competition tagged “Governor David Umahi Annual School Sports Competition”.
The commissioner said the governor’s presence at the venues showed his commitment to ensuring that policies aimed at reviving the competition were implemented.
“The governor was on Tuesday at the Government Secondary School Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area (LGA), which is the venue for the series in Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone.
“He watched the football match between St. Michael’s Secondary School Oshiri and the Government Secondary School Afikpo, his alma mater,” he said.
Akpuenika disclosed that Umahi would also observe proceedings at the Ezza Model Secondary School, Izzikworo, Ezza South LGA on Wednesday, which is the venue for the Central Senatorial Zone.
“The governor will also watch proceedings at the North Senatorial Zone and this is unprecedented in the state’s history.
“We also commend the governor for his donations to participants in the competition which will greatly motivate them for optimal performances,” he said.
Akpuenika assured of the successful hosting of other competitions which the governor has approved for 2021.
“The competitions include the King David male football championship and Queen Rachel women championship, which are for all the 24 state constituencies in the state.

“We will also organise the second edition of the David Umahi tertiary institution games,” he said.
The commissioner said that the new male and female football teams for the state would be formed with several of the talents discovered from the competitions.
“The youths are grateful to the governor for using the competition to engage them positively which will make them harness their talents and shun crime,” he said.
