Community in Nsukka divided over collection of tax levy

The peace of Obukpa community, Nsukka, was rent as factions were divided over who controls security levy.

Igwe Matthias Eze had installed a central body, to control the collection of N5000 security levy from each household after the dissolution of the twelve security units in the community. And this has upset some members of the community who felt that the traditional ruler was imposing security leadership on the people. The ensuing protest resulted in the arrest of five youths who were said to be behind it all.

Their arrest had a ripple effect as members of the community, including titleholders in the community, are demanding the unconditional release of the youths.

Responding to the situation in the community, Fabian Ozoko, the president of the town union, revealed that the units were disbanded because of their inability to account for levies collected, and it became necessary to have a central purse.
