Corps members deworm 700 Almajiri children

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Katsina State, on Thursday, dewormed more than 700 almajiri children in Rafukka community, Katsina Local Government Area Area of the state.

The exercise was conducted under the medical and health team/Red Cross Community Development Service (CDS) groups.

Speaking at the exercise, NYSC Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Ahidjo Yahaya, appealed to the communities to always encourage corps members to carry out projects that would benefit their people.

NAN also reports that the NYSC coordinator was represented at the occasion by the Assistant Head of Community Development Service (CDS), Alhaji Suleiman Sumaila.

Yahaya, who said that the corps members also sensitised the people of the community on intestinal worm infestation, commended the large turnout of people for the exercise.

Speaking at the event, the President of the group, Abubakar Usman, disclosed that they decided to carry out the programme in the community as part of their CDS in order to assist the people and the Almajiri children.

According to Usman, the exercise is also aimed at educating them on the importance of hygiene and good health.

He said that they had observed over time the mode of dressing of the Almajiris which, he said, was not encouraging, adding they oftentimes they moved about barefooted.

“Most of them also eat in-between meals in a very unhealthy manner, hence the need for them to be dewormed and be educated that a healthy environment is a key to good living,” he said.

The Ward Head of the community, Alhaji Salisu Sani, appreciated the corps members for selecting the community for the programme, praying God to protect them.

NAN reports that relief materials, such as detergents, footwear, clothing and plastic buckets, were also distributed by the corps members during the exercise.
