COVID-19: Government officials should take vaccines first — Tomori

Professor of Virology and former Vice Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Oyewale Tomori on Monday called on government officials to take the COVID-19 vaccines before other Nigerians to assure its safety.

Tomori made the call during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.

He also suggested that the officials take the COVID-19 vaccine openly so as to convince Nigerians of its safety.

“Let Nigerians see some of those government people take the COVID-19 vaccines and then we’ll watch them and see whether they survive or they don’t survive. Then gradually, we begin to build up people’s immunity.

“If you tell me to go and get the vaccine and then you take your own children to the UAE to go and take another vaccine, I will not believe in you.

“Do it openly at the Eagles Square. Get the government officials there. That will convince our people that it is safe to take the jab.

“It is a gradual thing. Over time, people will now begin to say that the officials that have taken the vaccine and are hale and hearty, therefore I can go there and take it. That’s what needs to be done.

“Asides health workers, our leaders must take the vaccine publicly. I would be one of the ones to go there and get the COVID-19 vaccine.”

The vaccines are expected to arrive in the country on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021. The 3.92million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines are from the COVAX facility in India.
