COVID-19: Student generates income from selling baby crochet items

A 20-year-old student of Kaduna State Polytechnic, Fatima Ali on says she is generating a huge income from the sales of baby crochet items to nursing mothers with the COVID-19 lockdown.

Ali, a Science and  Laboratory Technology student, in an interview on Friday in Kaduna said that she makes caps, cardigans, and socks for babies and sold them nationwide through the help of the internet.

Crochet is a process of creating textiles by using a crochet hook to interlock loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials.

She said that she was already in love with the skill and would want more youths to learn a skill in order to escape joblessness after schooling.

Ali said she used the COVID-19 lockdown period to learn the skill and started it as a business in December 2020.

“I started the business with a sum of N1,000 and I made two baby caps from it, which I sold at the rate of N1,000 each.

“I sell a set of baby wears which consists of a shawl, cardigan, trousers and a pair of shoes (booties) at the rate of N5,000 and I also make headband and ribbons for baby girls.

“I make more sales during rainy season and harmattan, as it is the time where babies need to be warm especially through the aid of the social media.’’
