Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Monday said the commission has granted bail to the detained former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano .

Bawa disclosed this while speaking to newsmen at the 5th Annual General Assembly of the Network of National Anti-corruption institutions in West Africa (NACIWA).

He said that the commission was only waiting for the former Governor to meet the bail conditions.

He explained that Obiano is yet to fulfill his bail conditions.

Bawa stressed that there’s nothing political about the former Governor’s arrest.

“Nothing political about the arrest of the former Anambra State Governor, Wille Obiano. He has been granted bail. But we await (when) he fulfills his bail conditions,” he said

Although the EFCC boss did not mention the bail conditions, a competent source said that a director in the civil service or a permanent secretary with a landed property would be required to sign for his release.

Obiano was arrested last week Thursday on his way to Houston Texas, United States after handing over to Governor Charles Soludo.

He was moved from the Lagos office to Abuja to commence a full investigation into the allegations against him on Friday morning

A top source at the commission said that Obiano was being interrogated for alleged diversion of N37 billion Security Vote and N5 billion Sure- P funds.

The EFCC is suspicious that the N42 billion was withdrawn cash by the embattled former governor.

However, the reprieve may soon come the way of embattled immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano who has been in the net of the anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may soon be freed as his successor, Prof. Charles Soludo has expressed hope that Obiano will be released soon.

Obiano was arrested by operatives of the EFCC at the Lagos International Airport on Thursday night last week while on his way to the USA with his wife Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano.

He is who is currently being detained by the agency for offenses alleged linked with huge sums of money while he was in office as Governor of Anambra state for eight years.

Governor Soludo expressed the optimism during a Thanksgiving service held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Isuofia in the Aguata’s local government area of the state.

Governor Soludo said “The former Governor Obiano is a good man, and he did his best for Anambra State. He will be released soon.”

In his inaugural speech shortly after he was sworn in as governor, Soludo had paid glowing tributes to former Governor Willie Obiano describing him as an honorable gentleman and a leader.

Obiano who enjoyed massive support in Anambra State is largely credited as one Governor Anambra has produced that has improved the infrastructural development of the State significantly.
