Eid-el-Fitr: LAWMA tasks residents on environmental sustainability

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on Lagos residents to imbibe the culture of cleaniness during and after the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr festivities.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, said in a statement signed by Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, Director, Public Affairs, LAWMA, on Saturday in Lagos.
Odumboni made the call ahead of the Workers’ Day and the Eid-el Fitr holidays.
Odumboni said that the Authority’s sanitation workers and waste managers had been mandated to work relentlessly across the metropolis, to ensure the state was clean during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
“In anticipation of an increase in waste generation during and after the celebrations, we have intensified our operations, deploying our personnel at strategic points in the state.
“They will clean the roads, highways, and markets, as well as black spots defacing the environment.
“We know that during major festivities like this, more waste will be generated by residents and we have fully prepared personnel to cart away the waste,” he said
Odumboni added that the PSP operators had been tasked with efficient service delivery by ensuring prompt evacuation of waste.
He also said that LAWMA would provide backup services to close any noticeable service gaps.
“We are totally committed to ensuring that Lagosians have a wonderful Sallah celebration.
“We are also working with the Ministry of the Environment, our supervisory ministry, and other stakeholders to help us achieve our objectives,” he said.
While wishing Lagosians a happy Sallah celebration, Odumboni called on residents to shun indiscriminate dumping of waste.
He urged residents to embrace the culture of sorting and bagging waste, especially animal waste to avoid pollution of the environment and facilitate easy evacuation.

“Improper waste disposal at unauthorized locations such as drains, road medians, and canals, is a major challenge we are tackling, and we won’t rest on our oars until we realize our aim.
“So, we are appealing to our people to bag their wastes and containerize them near their houses for easy evacuation by assigned PSP operators,” he said.
