Twelve people tested positive for the coronavirus during the three Euro 2020 group stage games in Munich, the local health authorities have disclosed.

They told DPA in response to a query that out of “several thousand rapid tests,” six people who wanted to attend a match tested positive.

Six others who tested positive were fans in the city for other reasons, such as to watch the game at public screenings.

There had been fears that the number of positive cases could rise because many Hungarian fans came to Munich for the match against Germany on Wednesday.

“No, there was no such surge,” a spokesperson said.

Many of the Hungary supporters gathered at Munich’s Max-Weber-Platz subway station to travel from there to the stadium in the evening.

The fans largely ignored social distancing requirements and mask-wearing regulations.

The coronavirus testing station set up at the station was not commissioned by the city and therefore did not have to pass on the results.

Two Hungarian supporters with whose rapid tests came out positive were reported to the health department on Wednesday.

They were among the 12 cases detected during group stage games in Munich.
