The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced the first phase of a new waste recycling initiative at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, as part of efforts to improve environmental sustainability across the country’s airports.
The initiative, unveiled on Thursday, introduces colour-coded recycling bins to promote proper waste sorting and encourage responsible disposal of refuse by passengers, airport workers and other users of the facility.
FAAN announced the development in a post on its official X handle, describing the programme as a key milestone in its drive to build cleaner and more environmentally sustainable airport terminals nationwide.
The launch ceremony was attended by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), Chairman of the FAAN Board, Umar Ganduje, and the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku.
According to FAAN, the newly installed recycling bins are designed to simplify waste segregation, making it easier for airport users to separate recyclable materials from general waste.
The authority said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen environmental management practices and promote sustainable operations within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
FAAN called on travellers and other airport users to support the programme by disposing of waste in the appropriate bins, stressing that individual actions can contribute significantly to keeping airport environments clean.
The agency added that the recycling project is expected to enhance waste management at airports while advancing its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
