Obi’s aide demands release of Obidient coordinator arrested in Akwa Ibom

Political Adviser to Peter Obi, Yunusa Tanko, has demanded the release of the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr Ben Smith, following his reported arrest by the state police command.
Tanko, in a post on X on Friday, said the arrest would not intimidate or silence members of the movement, insisting that citizens were constitutionally entitled to freedom of expression and association.
Smith was reportedly arrested after accompanying other supporters to seek the release of members detained during an Independence Day political gathering in Uyo. The arrests followed the police command’s directive cancelling or rescheduling political rallies, meetings and processions planned for October 1, citing security concerns.
Calling for Smith’s release, Tanko said, “We will not be intimidated, silenced, or cowed. Our Constitution guarantees the fundamental freedoms of association and expression, and we will continue to exercise these rights peacefully and courageously.”
He said the movement remained committed to justice, liberty and the rule of law, citing Sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which provide for freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly and association.
Tanko quoted Section 40 as stating that every person is entitled to assemble freely and associate with others, including by belonging to a political party, trade union or other association for the protection of their interests.
He added, “Under Sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), every person is entitled to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association. We will not be intimidated or cowed in the lawful exercise of these fundamental rights.”
He ended the post with a call for Smith’s release, writing, “Free Dr. Ben Smith!”
