Farmers and Millers at loggerheads with CBN

Farmers and millers are currently at loggerheads with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the ban on importing maize. The ban was placed by the Federal government as a means to stabilize and strengthen the economy, and CBN is executing the policy.

But this is not favourable to the farmers and millers as they seek an opportunity to import maize into the country. For example, members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) are requesting to import 360,000 metric tonnes of maize.

They hope this would reduce the cost of production, but the CBN is not willing to go against the order from the Federal Government.

Mr Isaac Okorafor, Director, CBN Corporate Communications, made it clear in emphatic words that “there is no plan to reverse that policy.”
