FCT infrastructure: Tinubu, Wike beat other administrations, says Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed his position that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has delivered more infrastructure projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) than any previous administration, dismissing criticism of his recent comments as a misrepresentation.

Akpabio spoke on Friday while representing President Tinubu at the commissioning of the access road leading to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in Karsana West District, Abuja.

His remarks came a day after his statement on the administration’s infrastructure record sparked reactions on television programmes and other public platforms.

Addressing the controversy, the Senate President maintained that his comments were strictly about developments in the FCT, stressing that they had been taken out of context.

According to him, the Tinubu administration has established a pattern of commissioning major infrastructure projects year after year, a feat he said had not been witnessed in previous administrations.

He disclosed that 31 projects had already been delivered as part of activities marking the administration’s third anniversary, adding that the FCT Minister had informed him that another 19 major projects would be completed before election activities begin next year.

Akpabio argued that the administration’s infrastructure drive is not limited to Abuja, citing ongoing federal projects across the country, including the Badagry-Sokoto highway corridor and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. He also praised the government’s decision to complete long-abandoned projects, saying it demonstrated continuity in governance rather than selective execution of projects.

The Senate President further pointed to what he described as the transformation of satellite communities within the FCT, noting that areas that previously received little government attention are now benefiting from improved road networks and other infrastructure.

He commended President Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as a productive partnership that is accelerating development across the nation’s capital.

“I challenge anyone to come to the FCT and see the changes for themselves,” Akpabio said, adding that the scale of infrastructure development has significantly improved movement and living conditions within Abuja.

Also speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike defended Akpabio’s remarks, insisting they were made specifically in reference to infrastructure development in the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike said the current administration has extended development beyond Abuja’s city centre to satellite towns that had previously experienced limited government presence.

He maintained that communities such as Karsana are now witnessing rapid urban growth because of sustained investment in roads and other critical infrastructure.

According to the minister, the ongoing projects reflect the administration’s commitment to ensuring that development reaches all parts of the FCT rather than being concentrated in the city centre alone.
