The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Federal Government has successfully evacuated another batch of 131Nigerians stranded in Libya.

Mr Kabiru Musa, Charge d’ Affairs of the Nigerian Mission in Libya, said the evacuees Nigerians arrived in Nigeria on Thursday via the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

Musa said that they included victims of human trafficking, and irregular migrants on voluntary return who took Libya as a transit country, amongst others.

He said that the repatriation exercise was part of IOM’s humanitarian voluntary return of migrants to their home countries.

He said that the IOM and the Nigerian Mission in Libya, supported by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs evacuated the stranded Nigerians after intervening in rescuing them from detention in Libyan facilities.

The Charge d’ Affairs added that the move was part of the efforts of the Nigerian government to ensure that none of its citizens remains stranded, unlawfully detained or maltreated in any foreign country.

“The Evacuees included victims of human trafficking and irregular migrants on voluntary return who had hitherto considered Libya as a transit point for the eventual journey to Europe.

“On arrival, the returnees will be reunited with their families and reintegrated into society,” Musa said.

Musa reiterated the commitments of the Nigerian Mission in Libya under the directives of the Ministry to facilitate the return of many stranded migrants. (NAN)
